All of the portraits in this series (with the exception of my self portraits - which were the progenitors of the series) are the result of a collaboration with photographer Ronald Leon Hale. I hand-made the paper head pieces that the models wear. Most of the paintings are either oil or gouache on cradled wood panel, many of which I built myself. I also employ ink or gel pen for the line work.
I am interested in the interplay of these very rigid geometric forms and the human body. I also find that by obscuring parts of the faces of the subjects, I am able to take away some of the identity of the subjects, allowing the viewer to explore form without the distraction of the human psyche of the model.
